TELECOMS INDUSTRY VENDORS HAVE SHOWN REAL LEADERSHIP IN THE FACE OF THE PANDEMIC. WE SHOULD ALL BE PROUD.
It’s genuinely hard to believe that just a few weeks ago most of us were bystanders to a raging debate about whether Mobile World Congress 2020 would, or should, go ahead. We didn’t know whether or not to pack our bags and head for Barcelona or stay home, a question which, at the time, seemed pressing.
The show, had it proceeded, would have ended on February 27th. Today, just 39 days later, Spain has officially recorded 140,510 cases of Coronavirus, and almost 14,000 deaths. It’s among the countries worst hit by the pandemic. You may wonder what, a few weeks ago, were we thinking?
It’s to the great credit of telco infrastructure companies and CSPs alike that, almost without exception, they stepped up to make responsible decisions at a time clear leadership was needed. While the authorities and conference organisers prevaricated, despite mounting evidence that the threat of pandemic was real, sponsor and attendee companies didn’t. It was their (calm but firm) withdrawal, in exponentially increasing numbers daily, in early February that in the end cemented the impossibility of the show going ahead.
Is it an exaggeration to say that the leadership these companies showed then is saving lives now? Probably not. The coronavirus statistics from Spain are horrendous. How much worse might they have been today had over 100,000 telco industry executives descended on Barcelona from all over the world a few weeks ago? Much worse is the only possible answer.
The point here is that the corporate world gets plenty of bad press. Excessive profits, taxes, layoffs, financial issues and the like all make good headlines. Yet here, we have a story demonstrating the opposite - companies in one industry taking a clear lead in social responsibility - and I’ve yet to read it almost anywhere in the media.
At Evolving Systems, we’re proud to be playing our part in the fight against Coronavirus via the deployment of our technology in Use Cases that help disseminate vital information to the public. And we’re proud to be part of an industry, and in the company of peers (even competitors), who’ve shown the courage to do the right thing when it matters. Bleak days remain ahead but those who work in telco can look at their efforts so far with justified pride.
