SIMPLER = SMARTER

Managing the Supply Chain is Evolving

Whatever issues lie in and around the supply chain, it’s safe to say that there isn’t much glamour about any of them. Managing warehouse inventory is “the weeds” of any business; knowing where stock is (and where it’s going), reducing errors in delivery, and much else are mission critical responsibilities for a business, though they’re rarely in the spotlight when it comes to investment.

This may be even more the case today, with cost management an ever-present concern in a stressed, post-COVID economy. We frequently see telco business leaders demanding cost optimization at the same time that resilience in processes is expected.

Leading analyst firm, Gartner, underlines this reality. It’s Supply Chain survey last year found that 17% of respondents see cost optimization as the top issue their companies needed to focus on in the near future, followed by better resilience. The question is, where (and in what) to invest in to achieve those goals? In Gartner’s view, budget needs to be committed to solid, mature IT capabilities that have demonstrated a consistent return on investment.

For telcos, the challenge manifests itself in how they can improve their management of physical stock inventories. Historically, this task has often fallen short of high-performance as many Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) have tended to deploy large, expensive monolithic ERP warehousing systems or, worse, manual processes and resources to manage their stock. We should all know from experience what happens next when this path is followed: Stock picking errors, stock stored at wrong locations, inadequate or incorrect reporting, to name a few become commonplace.

At Evolving Systems, we firmly believe that the unique inventory challenges that MNOs face are best solved by a bespoke IT solution rather than being thrown under the wheels of a ‘catch-all’ ERP. SIMplistix is our answer, a solution that builds upon the complex processes required for effective inventory management on the back of our specific industry expertise and experience. This matters, unless you think telcos are “any other business” and physical stock (including SIMs) are “any other product” (and if you’re reading this blog, that’s probably not the case).

So, what is SIMplistix?  First and foremost, it’s a warehouse inventory management system that’s designed from first principles to manage an operator’s entire physical stock ordering, acceptance and transfer processes, whilst simultaneously providing a real-time view of incoming and outgoing stock orders. Given how rapidly the telco sales and distribution landscapes are changing, not least driven by the need to incorporate new digitalized channels in a COVID world, the latter function is absolutely critical. It’s this, allied to newly emerging methods of offering services and delivery of stock, that will make the larger monolithic systems that telcos have relied upon, become increasingly redundant as the focus in the competitive telco landscape moves towards a better customer experience, not just for the buying process but also the order fulfilment process too.
